Radiofrequency thermal ablation is a treatment that destroys cancer cells using heat generated from high-frequency electrical currents passed through an electrode in the needle placed into or around the tumor. This treatment is much more effective in the preservation of liver functions as well as speedy recovery after the procedure compared with surgical resection.
The effectiveness and safety of radiofrequency thermal ablation are recognized to be more preferential than surgical resection in the case of one tumor in the liver with a size of not greater than 2cm. Recently, this skill became available in treating cancer cells measuring 3-5cm when it's operated with transarterial chemoembolization.
The Liver Cancer Center of Samsung Medical Center is praised for its international competitiveness in the field of radiofrequency thermal ablation. It adopted such treatment for the first time in Korea in 1000. Since then, approximately 600 cases of this procedure have been performed annually.
The Liver Cancer Center has been published over 200 these in this field so far. This remarks the third highest number of research results in the world following Harvard University in the United States and Sun Yat-sen University in China.
